The GFORCE Guide To... European Sports Championships

Added 03 Aug 2018 by GFORCE

In this GFORCE Guide to... we take a look at the 2018 European Sports Championships!

European by name and European by nature. This year's championships take place across the continent.

The championships are being hosted by both Glasgow and Berlin, 2-12 August 2018 with different sports assigned to each city.

This is actually the inaugural European Championships in this guise, even though there have been ones taking place in many of the individual sports for a while. This event pulls them all together into one championships which will take place every four years – like a mini Olympics!

Aquatics, cycling, golf, gymnastics, rowing and triathlon will officially take place in Glasgow, although Edinburgh, Loch Lomond and Gleneagles will also be the homes of certain competitions. Berlin will host the athletics championships from 7 August.

4,500 competitors will take their places on start lines, stride onto the mats and teeter over the edge of diving boards over the 10 day event which takes place between 2-12 August 2018.

Some winners, such as cyclists, get to wear special European champion’s jerseys until the next time the titles are up for grabs.

And the championships will also see the very first mixed gender team golf competition.

The new European Championships format is designed to give more prestige to the titles won, drawing the time between the events to be equal with Olympic and Commonwealth Games.

With more prestige, comes more coverage. Maybe you will be watching on the BBC or any other broadcaster, getting inspired and plotting your own path to glory in four years’ time!
